Protection of Your Privacy

You will probably be wondering what happens to personalised pages when the proxy indexes all visited pages. These pages will be excluded from indexing in order to to prevent anybody else from being able to read your emails and other private contents.

The following describes how the recognition of such pages works. As an example we will take webmail.

The Principle

When you visit a website you are - first of all - just any visitor to this page. To have it personalised for you, you have to identify. After that, you have to tell any sub-page that you are indeed identified. With webmail, this is when you enter your password.

This is the point when the protection mechanism does its work: as soon as you load a page using any identification technique (webmail mostly uses cookies), the page will be excluded from indexing.

The Techniques

Whenever one of the following techniques is used, the page will not be indexed:

Cookies

Cookies are short text messages sent by a website to be re-sent by you. A site can - for example - use them to save your personal preferences.

GET Parameters

GET or URL parameters are often used by simple web applications when there is only few data to be submitted. A URL including GET parameters looks like this:

http://www.example.com/index.php?name=bob&job=coder

POST Parameters

POST parameters can be used similarly to GET parameters, but are able to carry a greater payload. You cannot recognise them from the URL, but the proxy is able to detect them.

HTTP Password

HTTP passwords are often used for password-protected content on websites. In most cases, you can recognise them by pop-up windows - looking the same on all sites - prompting for your user name and password.
